Chapter 19

John Lee took the steps up to the second floor of the courthouse two at a time and knocked on D.W.’s open doorway. The sheriff looked up and asked, “What’s goin’ on, John Lee?”

“Kayla cleared me to go back to work,” he said, handing the sheriff the release form from the physical therapist.

D.W. took it from him and read it, nodding his head. “Congratulations. How about you start on the mornin’ shift tomorrow?”

“The sooner, the better,” John Lee told him.

“Go on back to the garage and see the mechanics. I told them you’d be back soon and to get a unit ready for ya.”

“Thanks,” John Lee replied.

As he was going out the door, the sheriff called his name. John Lee turned around, and D. W. said, “I know you’re cleared from PT, but how are you up here?” D.W. tapped his own forehead with his finger. “Like I said, if you need more time…”

“No. I’m good,” John Lee assured him.

“All right, then. Good to have you back, Deputy.”

“It ain’t your Charger, but it’s a good tight unit,” mechanic Buster Clements told John Lee as he handed him the keys to a year-old Ford Explorer. “Check it out, and if you see anything you think needs attention, let me know.”

John Lee went over the police-equipped SUV from front to back, finding nothing to complain about, even if it wasn’t the Charger, which was sitting in a fenced-in area next to the garage waiting for its police equipment to be stripped off before making its final journey to a junkyard. He got in the Explorer, started it, and tested the lights and siren.

“Looks good to me, guys. Thanks, I’ll drop my pickup off at home and have Maddy bring me back to get it.”

“If you want, I can follow you home, and you can bring me back and save Maddy the hassle since she’s on duty,” Buster said.

“I appreciate that,” John Lee told him.
